About
In this work, Nerikomi functions not merely as surface decoration, but as a method of constructing the ceramic body itself. The patterns formed through the layering and compression of differently colored clays appear on the surface while simultaneously acting as an internal structure that supports the form. Here, Nerikomi is not something deliberately drawn, but rather a trace of time left by the interaction between the material’s properties and the movement of the hand.
I build form through the accumulation of repeated layers and units, but subtle displacements and shifts that occur in the process gradually disrupt the initial order. Within a planned structure, chance intervenes, and this chance in turn generates a new order.
Clay continuously responds to pressure, producing different flows each time. Rather than forcing control over this process, I follow the direction of these flows, allowing the internal energy to guide the transformation of form.
Through this process, form emerges at the intersection of control and chance.
