About
Grounded in a hybrid identity formed between a Korean father and a Chinese mother, the work attends to the anxiety, contradictions, and possibilities that emerge at the boundaries. It begins with an exploration of a “bordered identity” that cannot be contained within fixed frameworks of nation or ethnicity. The third space, generated through the collision of fragmented cultures and memories, functions as both an unstable gap and a site where new possibilities unfold.
Through a sculptural process of layering and accumulation, the work visualizes a hybrid identity that resists belonging to any single side. These layers are traces in which different temporalities, emotions, and memories are entangled, unsettling dominant discourses that demand a singular and pure identity. It is an attempt to articulate a state that is “both this and that, and at the same time neither.”
The work also engages with the conflicting emotions that arise through acts of revelation. When long-concealed inner narratives are brought to the surface, a suffocating sense of release emerges, accompanied by an overwhelming anxiety—as if the protective shell has been stripped away, leaving the self exposed before others. This marks the moment when suppressed truths erupt, forming a key emotional foundation of the work.
The surface of the work functions as a site of inscription for the inner self. The images and traces that appear upon it are stories once hidden in order to appear indistinguishable from others, while also constituting fragments of a multilayered persona. The complex layers produced through the tension between Korean and Chinese identities no longer signify lack, but instead operate as a driving force of
formation and transformation. Ultimately, the work reveals the anxiety and ambiguity of existing at the boundary, while continuing to explore a state of constant fluctuation and becoming beyond fixed identities.
한국인 아버지와 중국인 어머니 사이에서 형성된 혼종적 정체성을 바탕으로, 경계에서 발생하는 불안과 모순, 그리고 가능성에 주목한다. 작업은 고정된 국가나 민족의 틀로 규정될 수 없는 ‘경계의 정체성’을 탐구하는 데서 출발한다. 서로 다른 문화와 기억의 파편들이 충돌하며 생성되는 제3의 공간은 불안정한 틈이자 새로운 가능성이 열리는 지점이다.
작품의 표면 위에 색을 덧입히고 이미지를 반복해 그려나가는 과정을 통해, 어느 한쪽으로도 귀속되지 않는 혼종적 정체성을 시각화한다. 이러한 층위는 서로 다른 시간과 감정, 기억이 뒤얽힌 흔적이며, 단일하고 순수한 정체성을 요구하는 지배적 담론을 흔든다. ‘이것이기도 하고 저것이기도 하며 동시에 그 무엇도 아닌’ 상태를 드러내는 시도이다.
작업은 ‘드러냄’에서 비롯되는 상반된 감정을 포함한다. 오랜 시간 숨겨온 내면을 표면 위로 끌어올릴 때, 숨 막히는 해방감과 동시에 보호막이 사라진 듯한 극도의 불안이 함께 발생한다. 이는 억압된 진실이 분출되는 순간의 감각이며, 작업 전반을 관통하는 정서적 기반이다.
작품의 표면은 내면을 기록하는 장(場)으로 기능한다. 그 위의 이미지와 흔적은 주변과 같아 보이기 위해 숨겨온 이야기이자, 다층적 페르소나의 단면이다. 한중 정체성의 충돌로 생성된 복합적 레이어는 더 이상 결핍이 아니라, 형성과 변화를 이끄는 동력으로 작용한다.
작업은 경계에 머무는 존재의 불안과 모호함을 드러내며, 고정된 정체성의 틀을 벗어난 상태를 지속적으로 환기한다.
