About
Chan Song Lee explores a state in which disappearance and generation coexist
through the formal language of contemporary ceramics. By focusing on the
temporality and transformative potential inherent in clay as a medium, the work
reveals processes of vanishing. The practice becomes visible through a cyclical
structure of collecting, observing, reconstructing, and firing. This research
examines the aesthetic potential embedded in states that contain disappearance.
The project originates from an interest in the finitude of life, beginning with the
experience of closely observing the surface of fallen fruits. Through the continued
act of collecting naturally fallen fruits, attention is drawn to the processes by
which decaying flesh and the seeds within undergo transformation. In the
developed body of work, these fruits are employed as formal motifs to express
both disappearance and generation. By revealing the inevitable perishability of
existence, the process resonates with ceramic firing, in which materials are either
lost or acquire permanence. By presenting these differing states together, the work
investigates both the materiality of ceramics and its philosophical implications.
The formal investigation expands from two-dimensional to three-dimensional
structures. On flat slabs, reliefs of fruits appear as clustered points and lines. The
repetition of points forms linear structures, arranged at measured intervals. The
transition from plane to volume leads to cubic forms, which articulate interior and
exterior spaces. Through openings, these forms function as a formal language that
invites reflection on emptiness. Unlike the ordered arrangement on the plane,
elements within the three-dimensional space occupy it in an irregular manner.
Collection, Observation, and Disappearance
By observing the surface of fallen fruits, the changing skin and decaying flesh
reveal the seeds within as symbols in which disappearance and generation overlap.
In this research, disappearance is understood not as a final outcome directed
toward absence, but as a concept that exists alongside generation.
Arrangement of Points and Lines, Relationality
Ceramic fruits reconstructed from collected fallen fruits are used as point-based units within the formal study and arranged on slabs at regular intervals.
Through the artist’s intervention, these points are aligned along a shared axis, forming
sequences shaped by intentional observation.
Representation of fruit and Permanence
The fruits are reconstructed in clay and fired, becoming materials that no longer decay but instead acquire permanence. The pale, whitish glaze layer does not fully melt even at the high temperature of 1250°C, generating bubbles on the surface.
This material quality suggests that disappearance is not a complete end, but a
state in which multiple possibilities continue to operate simultaneously.
