About

This study focuses on the historical context in which Goryeo celadon was formed

through the acceptance of Chinese ceramic techniques and aesthetics. Based on

this foundation, the work explores the process of reinterpreting and transforming

the formal and aesthetic qualities of Goryeo zoomorphic celadon into a

contemporary context.

Within the flow of contemporary ceramics, engaging with traditional ceramics mayinitially seem somewhat out of place. However, I believe that contemporary practice

does not exist in isolation from tradition; rather, it can be expanded through the

reinterpretation of historical formal languages from a present-day perspective, and

by reintroducing them into the context of use. From this standpoint, the work

began not by pursuing purely modern forms, but by exploring ceramic objects

that, while made today, could plausibly have existed in the Goryeo period.

In the making process, the work moves beyond mere reproduction of historical

artifacts and instead focuses on transforming them into functional objects for

actual use. Pieces such as the bamboo shoot–shaped teapot, lotus-shaped cups,

and inlaid lidded containers were first faithfully reproduced, and then modified in

proportion and structure to better suit contemporary use. In particular, the

original bamboo shoot–shaped teapot, with its elongated and large form, presented

practical limitations; therefore, it was reconfigured into a smaller and more

balanced form to improve usability.

Through this process, it became clear that simple formal modification alone does

not fully ensure functionality. For example, insufficient consideration of details

such as the lid structure or the spout resulted in imperfect pouring. This led to

the realization that, although Goryeo celadon was used in daily life, it may not

always have been optimized for practical use. Such observations opened up the

possibility of extending this research beyond formal inheritance, toward improving

and rethinking functionality.

This body of work continues from my undergraduate project on zoomorphic

teapots. While earlier works emphasized decorative richness and symbolic

expression, the current work focuses on improving the stability of celadon color

and the refinement of surface quality through experiments with clay bodies and

glazes. In particular, by varying the composition of the clay body, I was able to

address, to some extent, issues from previous works such as unstable celadon

tones and surface crazing.

Ultimately, this research seeks to explore not only the formal beauty of Goryeo

zoomorphic celadon, but also the ways in which these objects might have been

used. Moving beyond celadon as a purely symbolic or status-bearing object, the

work aims to reconstruct it into forms that can function meaningfully within

contemporary life. Through this, I propose that traditional celadon is not merely a

relic of the past, but a living ceramic language that can be reactivated through

present-day use and perception.
