I use the ceramic surface as a canvas on which I inscribe stories with dots and lines. By combining the techniques of pointillism and traditional sanggam inlay, I experiment with ways in which countless small marks come together to form an image, revealing depth and detail on the surface.

 

This process resembles making a wound in clay and repeatedly filling it with slip. Just as the wounds of life heal over time and remain as traces, the dots engraved on the ceramic surface become personal marks that expand into new narratives.

 

The dragon (龍) depicted in my work traditionally symbolizes protection and authority, yet for me it has become a personal emblem of overcoming. During a period when I struggled with low self-esteem, the act of inscribing the dragon allowed me to restore my belief in myself. Inspired by the method of tattooing through repeated dots, this technique embodies my desire to become stronger, while visualizing it on the ceramic surface as a new sculptural language where tradition and contemporary sensibility coexist.

 

Just as small dots accumulate into a larger form, small changes and efforts accumulate into growth. I hope this work offers viewers a moment of healing and comfort, and perhaps inspires them to recall and reflect on their own stories.

 

 

나는 도자 표면을 하나의 캔버스로 삼아 점과 선으로 이야기를 새긴다. 점묘화적 기법과 전통 상감 기법을 결합해 작은 점들이 모여 형상을 이루는 방식을 실험하며, 표면의 디테일과 깊이를 드러낸다.

 

이 과정은 흙에 상처를 내고, 그 상처를 화장토로 메우는 반복적인 행위와 닮아 있다. 마치 삶의 상처가 시간이 지나며 아물고 흔적으로 남듯, 도자 위의 점들은 나만의 기억이자 또 다른 서사로 확장된다.

 

작품에 담긴 용(龍)은 전통적으로 수호와 권위를 상징하지만, 나에게는 개인적인 극복의 상징이다. 자존감이 부족했던 시기를 지나며, 용의 이미지를 새기는 과정에서 나는 나 자신에 대한 믿음을 회복할 수 있었다. 타투의 점을 찍는 방식에서 착안한 기법은 ‘강해지고 싶은 바람’을 담고 있으며, 이를 도자 표면 위에 시각화함으로써 전통성과 현대적 감각이 공존하는 새로운 조형언어를 만들어가고자 한다.

 

작은 점들이 모여 큰 형상을 이루듯, 작은 변화와 노력이 쌓여 나를 성장시키는 과정이 이 작업 속에 녹아 있다. 이 작품이 관람자에게도 작은 치유와 위로, 그리고 자신만의 이야기를 떠올리게 하는 계기가 되기를 바란다.
