In shamanism, the shaman is positioned as a mediator between spirits and humans, as well as a solver of collective or individual problems. The researcher's work focuses on the rituals that characterize a shaman with this background. In particular, shamans in Siberia attempt to separate the body from the soul in order to travel to other worlds, such as the underworld, in a ritual called Ecstasy. During this state, the shaman experiences a dramatic mental shift and loses control of their body. Other states of trance, the peak of ecstasy, and possession, a state of coexistence with the spirit, are also important elements of the shamanic ritual.
The artist was inspired by this transcendental aspect of shamanism, and expressed the mental changes that shamans experience during the rituals by transforming their bodies with incisions, combinations, and distortions. With this work, the artist attempts to combine the unique combination of Siberian shamanic rituals and ceramic sculpture, and to convey the collective social restorative qualities of shamanic rituals in the sculpture. Through these attempts, the artist hopes to bring emotional comfort to the viewer, and to show empathy for the mental turmoil of an unstable society as fellow human beings living in the same time.
샤머니즘에서 샤먼은 영들과 인간 사이의 중재자이자 집단 혹은 개인이 가진 문제의 해결사로서 자리한다. 연구자의 작품은 이러한 배경을 가진 샤먼의 특징 중 그가 행하는 의례에 초점을 맞춘다. 특히 시베리아의 샤먼은 의례에서 저승과 같은 타계로의 여행을 위해 신체와 영혼의 분리를 시도하는데, 이를 황홀경(Ecstasy)상태라고 부른다. 이 상태에서 샤먼은 극적인 정신적 변화를 느끼며 신체의 주체성을 잃어가게 된다. 이 밖에도 황홀경의 정점을 느끼는 트랜스(trance), 영과 공존하는 포제션(possession)상태 또한 샤먼의례의 중요한 요소로서 작용한다.
작가는 이와 같은 샤먼의 초월적인 양상에 영감을 받았으며, 이에 따라 샤먼이 의례의 과정에서 느끼는 정신적 변화를 절개, 결합, 왜곡 등의 변형된 신체로 표현하였다. 더하여 본 작품으로 작가는 시베리아 샤먼 의례와 도자 조형의 독특한 결합을 도모함으로써, 샤먼 의례가 가지고 있는 집단 사회 회복의 특성을 조형 작품에 담아 보고자 했다. 이러한 시도를 통해 작가는 작품을 관람하는 이로 하여금 정서적 위로를 받길 원하며, 동시대에 살아가는 같은 인간으로서 불안정한 사회에 대한 정신적 혼란에 공감을 나타내고자 한다.
