KIM Sooah

 I feel a deep affection for familiar landscapes and things that are gradually disappearing. The experience of losing my childhood neighborhood to redevelopment inspired me to express the sadness of the disappearance of places filled with memories through my work. Initially, I started with personal memories, but gradually expanded my interest to the old city center of Seoul, especially the redevelopment areas where the pace of change is rapid.
Amidst the rapidly changing reality of the city's seemingly unchanging appearance, I use ceramics to record the current landscape that may one day disappear. It is a process that goes beyond mere documentation to visually capture the traces of time in a place and the memories of the people who live there. Observing the city with a traveler's eye, I capture various elements such as old buildings, contrasts between structures, and the beauty of architectural outlines, and transfer them to the medium of ceramics.

Ceramics has a timeless quality that makes it the perfect medium to capture my desire to hold onto fading memories forever. I deliberately choose a flat expression to focus on the content of the piece rather than its form. Through a painterly expression method, I draw on a flat board, and after the initial drawing, I refine the board to express the shape of the building. In particular, the drawing technique of applying a base color to the board and scratching out the image with a sharp tool reflects my intention to create a delicate expression, as if reviving a blurred memory. By delicately drawing the details that are difficult to express with a brush, I am able to bring back the blurred memories with clarity and visually embody the subject matter I want to record.

My work is ultimately a record of memories and memories. The buildings and cityscapes engraved on the timeless ceramics bear the traces of someone's life. Through my work, I hope that viewers will be able to recall their own precious memories of place.

나는 익숙한 풍경과 점차 사라져가는 것들에 깊은 애정을 느낀다. 어린 시절을 보낸 동네가 재개발로 사라지는 경험은, 추억이 깃든 장소의 소멸에 대한 안타까움을 작업으로 표현하게 된 계기가 되었다. 처음에는 개인적인 기억에서 출발했지만, 점차 서울 구도심, 특히 변화의 속도가 빠른 재개발 지역으로 관심의 영역을 넓혀 가고 있다.

변하지 않을 것 같던 도시의 모습도 빠르게 변화하는 현실 속에서, 나는 언젠가 사라질지 모르는 현재의 풍경을 도자기에 기록한다. 이는 단순한 기록을 넘어, 그 장소에 깃든 시간의 흔적과 그곳에서 살아가는 사람들의 기억을 시각적으로 담아내는 과정이다. 여행자의 시선으로 도시 곳곳을 관찰하며 오래된 건물, 건축물 간의 대비, 건축물의 윤곽이 나타내는 아름다움 등 다양한 요소들을 포착하고, 이를 도자기라는 매체 위에 옮긴다.

도자기는 오랜 시간 동안 변치 않는 물성을 지니고 있어, 희미해져 가는 기억을 영원히 붙잡아두고 싶은 나의 마음을 담기에 가장 적합한 매체이다. 나는 작품의 형태보다는 그 안에 담긴 내용에 집중하기 위해 의도적으로 평면적인 표현 방식을 택한다. 회화적인 표현 방식을 통해 평면 도판 위에 그림을 그리고, 초벌 후 도판을 다듬어 건물 형태를 표현하기도 한다. 특히 도판에 밑색을 바르고 날카로운 도구로 이미지를 긁어내는 그리는 기법은, 흐릿한 기억을 되살려내듯 섬세하게 표현하고자 하는 나의 의도를 반영한다. 붓으로 표현하기 어려운 섬세한 부분까지 정교하게 그려내어, 흐릿한 기억을 선명하게 되살려 기록하고자 하는 주제를 시각적으로 구현하는 것이다.

나의 작업은 결국 기억과 추억에 대한 기록이다. 시간이 흘러도 변치 않는 도자기에 새겨진 건물과 도시 풍경은 누군가의 삶의 흔적을 담고 있다. 작품을 통해 관람객들이 자신만의 소중한 장소적 기억을 떠올리기를 바란다.
