About
The artist has lived with the feeling of ‘anxiety’ since childhood.
At times, this feeling served as a sustaining companion, yet it was only much later that the artist fully understood its roots.
Growing up as a child of a multicultural family meant more than just a background; it involved navigating an environment where indifference and prejudice towards difference coexisted, shaping complex emotions around ‘otherness.’
In elementary school, witnessing a friend being ostracized for their appearance left a deep impact.
From that moment, the artist sensed that being different could be a weakness, and began to conceal their own identity.
Though Korean, the artist often felt as if standing on a boundary, caught in the confusion of identity,
further unsettled by societal demands for homogeneity.
This body of work attempts to confront the inner turmoil and silenced experiences through ceramic figurative sculpture and painting.
The ceramic figures symbolize the artist’s own self,
while the imagery painted on their surfaces visually reveals inner memories and emotions.
The organic nature of clay and the firing process embody the act of containing feelings, healing, and reconstructing the self.
By bringing forth stories once hidden,
the artist has come to realize that what was once seen as a weakness—the ‘difference’—need not be something to hide.
Rather, it can be the starting point of new perspectives and possibilities.
Through this sculptural journey, the artist poses a question to us all:
Who are we, and where do we belong? And how do we face the differences among us?
작가는 유년 시절부터 ‘불안’이라는 감정을 내면에 품고 살아왔다.
그 감정은 때로는 지탱해주는 친구 같았으나, 그 뿌리가 어디서 비롯되었는지는 오래 후에야 깨달았다.다문화 가정의 자녀로서 자라온 경험은 단순한 배경을 넘어, 편견과 무관심이 공존하는 환경 속에서 ‘다름’에 대한 복잡한 감정을 만들어냈다.
초등학교 시절, 친구의 외모가 동남아인 같다는 이유로 따돌림을 당하는 모습을 목격한 후,
작가는 다름이 약점이 될 수 있다는 불안을 느끼며 스스로의 정체성을 숨기기 시작했다.
한국인이지만 때때로 경계 위에 선 듯한 정체성의 혼란 속에서 성장했고,
사회가 요구하는 동질성의 기준은 그 존재를 더욱 흔들리게 했다.
이번 작업은 그동안 억눌렸던 내면의 혼란과 침묵을 도자 인물 조형과 그림을 통해 마주하고자 하는 시도이다. 도자기로 만들어진 인물의 형태는 작가 자신의 자아를 상징하며,
그 외벽에 새겨지는 그림들은 내면의 기억과 감정을 시각적으로 드러낸다.
흙이라는 재료와 조형 과정은 감정을 담아내고, 소성 과정은 치유와 재구성의 의미를 내포한다.
작가는 이렇게 숨기고 싶었던 이야기를 꺼내며,과거에는 약점이라 생각했던 ‘다름’이 꼭 숨겨야 할 것이 아니었음을 깨닫게 되었다.오히려 그것은 새로운 가능성과 시선의 출발점이 될 수 있음을 발견했다.
이 조형적 여정을 통해, 작가는 우리 모두에게 묻는다.
우리는 과연 누구이며, 어디에 속해 있는가? 그리고 우리는 그 다름을 어떻게 마주할 것인가?
