About
Lee Chansong works under the theme of “the boundary of extinction”, employing ordinary fruits as a motif to visually explore the continuity of objects. By capturing the specific states of decay, the work reveals the fragility of natural forms, while the use of ceramic glaze produces unfamiliar images of color and texture. Through this process, the artist continually contemplates the threshold between life and death.
By shaping clay and glaze with the hand, the artist secures a basic sense of control inherent to craft, yet inevitably encounters unpredictable outcomes during firing. These uncertainties and transformations generated by ceramic materials are perceived as a form of “otherness,” while the act of negotiating and regulating them is revealed within the work itself.
이찬송은 ‘소멸의 경계’를 주제로 작업하며, 일상에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 열매를 소재로 삼아 사물의 연속성을 시각적으로 탐구한다. 특히 열매가 썩어가는 구체적인 상태를 포착하여 자연물의 취약함을 드러내고, 도자 재료인 유약을 통해 색과 질감의 낯선 이미지를 구현한다. 이러한 과정을 통해 살아있는 것과 죽은 것 사이의 경계를 지속적으로 사유한다.
작가는 손을 통해 점토와 유약을 다루며 공예의 기본적인 통제 가능성을 확보하지만, 소성 과정에서는 예측 불가능한 결과와 마주하게 된다. 이처럼 도자 재료가 만들어내는 불확실성과 변화를 ‘낯선 타자’로 바라보고, 동시에 이를 조절하려는 자신의 행위를 작업 속에 드러내고자 한다.
